DIY Natural Healthcare
Post courtesy of the Evolving Show podcast.
Our healthcare system is cynical. (The cost of curative treatment for hemophilia is a “mere” 3.4 million dollars!) The climate crisis is already here. The frequency of “natural” disasters has increased dramatically. Are you prepared to take care of your health yourself – if and when – no medical care is available? Do you know how to help yourself in an emergency? Do you have DIY natural healthcare staples in your house and medicine cabinet?
The hottest topics today are sustainability and self-sustainability. DIY natural healthcare is essential for self-sustainability.
Why DIY is self-explanatory: if and when no professional medical care is available it’s good to be self-sufficient.
Why natural healthcare? For two good reasons: 1/ a layperson has no access to prescription medications 2/ natural remedies are the predecessors of today’s pharmaceutical drugs and remain a valid treatment option which in many cases is just as effective and safer than prescriptions.
The topic is huge but here are a few things you should know and a few items you should never be without.
Many diseases afflict us because our immune system is vulnerable. There are two effective ways to strengthen it.
How to strengthen the immune system
Since most of the immune system resides within the digestive system, feeding it natural probiotics (as in homemade milk kefir) is a great idea for anyone. A cup of milk kefir a day will do your body good and yes, support your immune system.
The next step: every morning on an empty stomach, have an immune system-strengthening drink.
You’ll need a 10 oz mug. Put in it:
1 tsp of finely grated, fresh ginger root
1 tsp of minced garlic
juice of ½ a lemon
pour enough boiling water over the ingredients to fill up the mug
Stir and drink slowly. (Don’t burn yourself!)
I like to jazz things up and I tried to enhance the drink by adding to it different biological powders such as spirulina, turmeric, red beets, and so on.
My drink of choice today contains turmeric (always add a pinch of black pepper when using turmeric; black pepper improves the absorption of turmeric) and red beet powder that’s in addition to ginger, garlic, and lemon juice.
What’s the magic?
Ginger helps regulate blood pressure and digestion, control stress, balance mood, and keep anxiety at bay (Ginger provides indirect anti-inflammatory benefits.)
Garlic is a powerful immune system booster! It has detoxifying and antibiotic properties; can help prevent cardiovascular disease, lowers high blood pressure and cholesterol, and is known for preventing several types of cancer.
Lemon juice protects heart health, prevents kidney stone formation, prevents anemia and cancer, and helps control weight.
I’m adding to my morning drink also:
Turmeric powder which has anti-inflammatory properties (helps fight the low-level inflammation that leads to many chronic diseases) and is a powerful antioxidant. It protects the heart and prevents cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
and
Red beet powder which keeps the heart, blood vessels, and liver in good shape; supports brain and eye health; and provides an extra shot of energy for the day.
The morning drink is neither a cure nor a treatment for a specific disease. Personally, I consider it my health insurance. It improves my immune response, it makes me stronger and more resilient to disease. (I didn’t experience any health problems – not even flu or allergy – since I made it my daily ritual, over 2 years ago.)
Now, the drink is excellent for prevention. But what to do when you fall ill and no medical care is available for one reason or another?
I recommend that you develop some new shopping habits and fill up your medicine cabinet with natural remedies.
To make DIY remedies you’ll need a few staples. Get into the habit of including the perishable ones on your grocery shopping list.
You MUST have: garlic, ginger root, lemons, apple cider vinegar, virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and good-quality raw honey, at all times. All of them have therapeutic properties.
Among the natural remedies, you absolutely have to have are: oil of oregano, activated charcoal, grape molasses, eucalyptus essential oil, and flaxseed meal. Of course, having good-quality spices is always wise.
With just the few must-have natural products, you’ll be able to prepare many DIY remedies for common ailments such as indigestion, acid reflux, lung issues, liver problems, cough, sleeplessness, muscle pain, constipation, fatigue, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, food poisoning, and illnesses that require antibiotic therapy.
We are approaching the era of self-sustainability, self-sufficiency, and resourcefulness.
It’s better to be prepared than helpless.
